Deliberately carving away at the sapwood, which hides the heartwood, I left sapwood on the concave to point out the problem: what is most often seen as the key connector for beauty. I interrupt the inherent beauty of the piece by carving in a ring isolating what can make something truly beautiful, the story of its life.
